This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in grooming whether it be working for someone else in a busy grooming parlour, mobile, in their own home or even for established groomers seeking to update their knowledge and grooming techniques. This course provides the basic and general knowledge required and offers the student a wide range of practical experience with a variety of breeds.

Each enrolled "Gold" Course student will receive a " personal equipment pack" which includes a comprehensive array of professional grooming tools and other items considered essential to the Course tuition. Students are encouraged to use the equipment supplied in their packs; all other equipment is available in the grooming parlour. There is a certificate of attendance issued on completion.

The course is structured to include the safe handling of dogs, how to brush out and de-mat, and the selection and use of tools. Students are taught to recognise signs of internal and external parasites and observe the early indications of ill health. Bathing procedure, selecting the correct shampoo, and various drying procedures are taught. Tuition is given in cleaning ears, cutting nails and how to express anal glands.

The use and care of clippers and blades is covered comprehensively. There is hands-on experience of clipping, scissoring and styling of the poodle in pet trim, how to groom, clip and strip all types of gun dogs; also further clipping and stripping of terriers and how to style their heads, and how to scissor breeds such as the Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire Terrier, Bearded Collie, Old English Sheep Dog, Tibetan Terrier and crossbreeds.

Cleaning, sterilising and the maintenance of equipment are all dealt with in considerable depth. First aid for animals is covered, e.g. heat stroke, burns, scalds, fits, stings, heart attack, shock, haemorrhages and wounds. Information on major dog diseases, their control, and how to prevent disease spreading through the grooming parlour, form part of the course curriculum.

Aspects of customer relationship, matters of health and safety, instruction on cleanliness in the grooming parlour and how to handle difficult dogs are other important subjects covered.

Students will receive a variety of handouts and will have access to our library and digital camera.
